Sponsored links, reference links, and how we tell them apart

In short: outbound links labelled sponsored may earn us a commission. Reference links never do. Every affiliate link is tagged rel="sponsored" in the page source so machines can tell too.

What this site is

JM Gardening is an editorial trade-referral hub for landscape contractors, groundskeepers, hoteliers, golf courses and estate gardeners across Ireland and 24 more EU countries. PlantGift is this site's fulfilment partner — plant supply and order fulfilment all sit on PlantGift.ie (Ireland) and PlantGift.eu (Continental EU). PlantGift links are commercial referral links, carry referral tracking, and are tagged rel="sponsored" in the page source.

Sponsored vs reference

The supplier directory and the tools / soils-composts / landscape-machinery pages mix two kinds of outbound link:

  • Sponsored links — we earn a commission or referral fee if you order via the link. They are clearly badged on the page (a “Sponsored” pill on the listing) and carry rel="sponsored noopener" in the HTML so search engines and AI crawlers can identify them.
  • Reference links — non-affiliated suppliers included as tender-research baselines or because they fill a category gap. We earn nothing if you click. They carry rel="noopener" only.

How we choose what to list

The directory exists to be useful first. A merchant only becomes sponsored after we've already decided they belong in the directory on editorial grounds — never the other way round. We do not list a supplier we wouldn't buy from ourselves.

When a sponsorship deal lapses we either move the entry to reference status or remove it. Sponsored status is reviewed quarterly.

Who we partner with

We partner with family-run, Gaeltacht and Irish/EU SME suppliers wherever possible. Amazon and broad multi-vendor marketplaces (vidaXL, BigBuy, Syncee) are not in the directory by editorial choice — the trade audience this site serves benefits more from naming the actual grower, maker or family-run trade desk than from one more listing on a commodity marketplace.

Where networks are used, sponsored links are routed through a direct supplier discount-code arrangement, or — if a family-run merchant happens to run a network programme — a single tracked deeplink. Tracking parameters identify the page that generated the click; we do not share any personal information with merchants. Hostinger access logs and supplier-side dashboards are the only data we see.
